Jim
Augustyn first learned about solar energy as a boy working on his suntan
in the hot summer sun on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Indiana Sand
Dunes. After graduating from college in Chicago, he moved to San Francisco,
and then to Berkeley California where he now lives with his wife, Elizabeth,
and three cats. Jim obtained a B.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and designed nuclear power plants for the first seven years of his carreer. He then began working with a small group of architects and engineers designing solar heating systems and software to predict their performance. The Solar Cat Book, Jim's first book was published in 1979 by the Ten Speed Press. It was an instant hit throughout the then burgeoning ranks of solar energy enthusiasts, becoming one of the most successful books in the field. Since then Jim has continued to work as an consultant and researcher in the solar field, having run his own business, Augustyn & Company ,for the last 15 years. This work has focused on solar energy resource assessment and measuring the performance of solar energy systems. His clients ave included national laboratories, foreign governments, utilities, and research laboratories, domestic electric utilities, solar power plant developers, state and municipal governments, as well as regular people. |
